Free Electronic Books (ebooks)

Whether you have an eReader, computer, Laptop, Netbook or Smart Phone there are plenty of free ebooks (electronic) books that you can down load and keep free of charge, and legally.

You can also download ebooks from your local library, just as you would borrow a hard copy, without leaving your home.

So, where do you start?

Perhaps the first site to make you aware of should be Google Books, mainly for the volume of free ebooks available for download.

Google Book Search is a very useful tool for finding books according to keyword search. The Google database contains a massive library of scanned books. You can also use Google Book Search to find and download books in the public domain. Google claim to have over ten million scanned books.

Most scanned works are no longer in print or commercially available.

Fictionwise who have a section for their free ebook downloads. There is a great search facility to find that long lost gem, or alternatively, a more modern book, totally free.

As with most of these sites, you will have to register, but once registered you can simply login, download and enjoy!

Project Gutenberg claim to be the first producer of free ebooks. All of the books available were previously published on paper by bona fide publishers and digitized by us with the help of thousands of volunteers.

Again, the ebooks can be easily downloaded and you can choose between ePub, Mobipocket, HTML and simple text formats.

Another nice feature of their site is the top 100 books for yesterday, the week or the month, by title or author.

Books can be downloaded in various formats, including PDB, ePub, PDF and Lit.  If your device doesn’t support one of the formats there are some good free conversion software packages available (see Free Software page).
